ARTIST'S STATEMENT
My art is increasingly about the stories that shape us. Stories, new or old, that flesh out the bones of life and remain as place holders in our minds.
My paintings begin with a persistent image in my memory, or with a new insight. Then, as a process painter I work intuitively—in the overlap between what is seen and what is felt.
I believe in the Power of Place—the evocative settings of stories. So my work is grounded in the shapes and colors of both my native, austere Southwest, and the verdant Northwest where I now live and work. The joy of color, subtle or bold, is at the heart of my art.
My paintings develop through multiple layers. For me, each layer is an excavation to help me find meaning that may be buried below, behind, or in a forgotten place.
I enjoy a little mystery in my art, which I hope opens it to the stories and histories of others.
