ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My art is increasingly about the stories that shape us.  The everyday stories, new or old, that flesh out the bones of life. I want to catch the essence of experience—usually small moments that remain as place holders in our minds.

My paintings often begin with a new insight or a memory. Then, as a process painter I work intuitively—in the overlap between what is seen and what is felt.

I believe in the power of place—the setting of the story is important.  So my work is grounded in the shapes and colors of both my native, austere Southwest, and the verdant Northwest where I now live and work. The joy of color, subtle or bold, is at the heart of my art.

I like thinking about layers—below, behind or forgotten. I enjoy a little mystery in my art, which I hope opens it to the viewer’s own stories.

Art is called “work” for a reason.  For me, continuing to grow as an artist means being fully present by studying, taking risks, and most of all, showing up to do the work.
